Community Initiatives

The YMCA of Burlington and Camden Counties work stretches beyond our walls and directly into communities throughout Burlington and Camden Counties.

We have established strategic partnerships with schools, policy makers, residents and other community stakeholders to create programs and policies that support healthy living, youth development and social responsibility.

 

YOUTH INTERVENTION

reachroundedYMCA Pre-REACH

Pre-REACH is a 4 week series designed to expose “at-risk” students that are 10-13 years of age living in Burlington and Camden counties to healthy choices, positive mentors, leadership activities, and community resources. The primary goal is to serve as mentors and role model to adolescents and pre-teens in danger of engaging in risky behaviors.

YMCA REACH

REACH (Realizing Educational And Career Hopes) provides youth facing economic, social, and developmental barriers with job coaching, basic skills tutoring and personal and group mentoring sessions to encourage positive growth and foster an environment designed to build students in a holistic way.

 

YOUTH PROGRAMS

YMCA Civic Engagement

YMCA Civic Engagement programs are designed to introduce teen students to democratic process. Through multiple programs and events youth discover their leadership skills, debate world issues, and learn to be socially aware and responsible. Each program is structured around the Y’s four core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.  Learn More

Healthy U

Healthy U is designed to prevent childhood obesity by instituting behavioral changes in children ages 3-13. The program uses a multi-pronged approach to educate children on proper nutrition, increase their physical activity and engage parents to get more involved with their children to lead a healthier lifestyle.  Learn More

Soccer for Success®

Soccer for Success is a city-wide program that is facilitated by the YMCA of Burlington and Camden Counties in partnership with the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Campbell Soup Company and the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. Soccer is viewed as a powerful vehicle for social change, with the goal of ensuring the children in underserved communities have easy and affordable access to quality soccer programs that support their physical and personal development.

Safe Places to Play staffs several parks with Y Counselors, who keep youth engaged, safe and active after school and throughout the summer, by leading group games and sports and providing fun playground equipment for children to use. Grant funding currently allows the Y to continue to lead the charge in ‘taking back’ the public parks in the City of Camden by offering this great program at no-cost to Camden residents. Learn More

Watershed Education by Bike (WEB)

Watershed Education by Bike is an after school program in the City of Camden. Kids 11-14 years old participate in riding and learning events designed to teach them how different factors affect the watershed and ecosystem, and consequently, their own lives.  Learn More

 

POLICY REFORM

Camden Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities is a program that builds a healthier Camden by lowering rates of overweight and obese children, increasing access to healthy & adequate food (quantity & quality) and opportunities for safe physical activity, decreasing food insecurity and hunger and mobilizing public will to support these efforts.

New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids-Camden

NJPHK-C is a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) with the primary goal to build and strengthen childhood obesity prevention activities in Camden, NJ focusing on policy and environmental changes for improved nutrition and increased physical activity. In Camden, this project is led by the YMCA of Burlington & Camden Counties and the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.  Learn More

 

SOCIAL SERVICES & ADULT EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

Child Sexual Abuse Prevention

YMCA of Burlington and Camden Counties makes prevention a priority by using Stewards of Children® curriculum to train staff and volunteers who interact with youth. Criminal background checks are conducted on staff and volunteers who work with youth and policies are implemented that limit opportunities for one adult to be alone with one child.  Learn More

The Women’s Opportunity Center assists women who have lost financial support due to separation, divorce, death or disability of a spouse and is committed to help women gain economic self-sufficiency through education, job readiness, networking, outreach, referrals and emotional support.  Learn More
