NJPHK-Camden’s policy goals are to increase access to healthy food and create safe environments for the children of Camden.

During the 2013-2015 implementation phase, our strategies have focused on the following approaches for improving nutrition and increasing opportunities for physical activity – both of which are critical to reversing the childhood obesity epidemic:

  • Provide technical assistance to Camden City Public School for implementation of its wellness policy and its Breakfast-in-Classroom program throughout district
  • Improve and implement a comprehensive school wellness policy in non-public schools
  • Improve access to walking/bicycling and citywide adoption of street scale improvements
  • Replicate Safe Places to Play Initiative increasing access and opportunities for physical activities in city park
  • Continue the partnership with Campbell Soup Company’s Healthy Communities Initiative to develop a Farm to School pilot program

Accomplishments to date include:
  • Wellness Policies are adopted as a result of NJPHK Technical Assistance:
    • Camden Public School District (impact on 26 public schools)
    • Respond, Inc. (impact on 12 childcare centers; 800 students)
