Favorite Y moment:
One of my greatest memories in my career with our YMCA is Pre-Kindergarten graduation in 2012. I watched as these amazing little human beings spoke, sang, danced and demonstrated how ready they were to go to “big school” that coming fall. When I started as a Child Care Director of the Mt. Laurel Y Child Care Center in 2006, these same children were infants, just 6-8 weeks into their life. At that graduation I realized how important and magical the Y is for children and families. We helped nurture these babies into children, we supported parents who were working or going to school to better themselves and we strengthened families by providing a safe, loving and caring environment where children can thrive. I was overwhelmed with pride and a sense of meaning and belonging at this moment, and realized just how impactful the YMCA is in our community.

Favorite Y moment:
My neighbor recently lost his wife to a long battle with Pancreatic Cancer.  As a cancer survivor, I could truly appreciate his pain.  I ran into my neighbor at the Y and he explained that while he has been swimming at the Y for a long time – it has now taken on a new meaning for him.  He tried other swim clubs but the Y’s friendly atmosphere made him feel so welcome.

I felt a deep sense of satisfaction that, although we could never replace his wife, we gave this kind and gentle man a place to go to feel like part of a family.  We had an impact on one man’s suffering from a devastating loss.  This is why I work at the Y.

About Jen:
I started at the Y as a camp counselor and lifeguard when I was 16 years old and have been at the Y ever since!

Favorite Y moment:
In college, while working at the YMCA of Greater Richmond as a swim team coach, I had the opportunity to work with a 5-year-old, Ben, who has autism. Watching his swim technique improve and friendships with his teammates develop was amazing. Ben’s influence helped me to realize that I wanted to work for the Y, where we can create communities that are inclusive and nurture everyone’s potential. Ben continues to remind me of my personal mission and inspire my work every day.
