Promoting the development of civic engagement attitudes, skills and behaviors in young people is central to strengthening communities. At the Y, we offer a variety of programs for teens to get them engaged in the democratic process. Our programs encourage the participation of all students and give teens the opportunity to witness true principle-centered servant leadership and learn the value of collaboration and coalition building.
YMCA Civic Engagement Programs
Model United Nations-www.ymcamun.org
(October –January, with a weekend conference in Hershey, PA)
Introduces students to the operation and structure of the United Nations while providing them with an opportunity to actively learn about world cultures and debate issues of international importance. Students represent countries, play the roles of ambassadors/diplomats and judges in order to discuss and seek solutions to global issues. However Y-MUN is not a competition, but rather encourages the participation of all students through true servant leadership. In our program principle-centered behaviors are esteemed above winning at all cost and students learn the value of collaboration.
NJ State Y&G - www.njyng.org
