Camden County Programs
The closing of the YMCA of Camden County during the winter of 2008 was an unfortunate conclusion to many years of YMCA programs and services provided in Camden County. Thousands of Camden County residents were affected by the closure. Many families depended on the essential services the Y provided, including wellness programs, child care, before and after school care, summer day camp and aquatic programs.
The YMCA of Burlington County responded immediately. Former Camden County YMCA memberships were honored without additional payment. The YMCA school-age child care program, serving children in eleven Camden County schools, continued without interruption, with support from the United Way of Camden County. The South Jersey Aquatic Club Swim Team was brought under management of the YMCA of Burlington County shortly after, swimming at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Camden County. Finally, day camp program collaboration with Perkins Center for the Arts to serve Camden City children was made a reality thanks to funding provided by the Campbell Soup Foundation.
In October of 2008, YMCA of the USA officially assigned the Camden County territory to the YMCA of Burlington County. Today, several former Camden County YMCA members continue to meet their needs as members of the YMCA of Burlington County. All three of the programs that were rescued continue to operate and experience success under the leadership of our YMCA. We look forward to carrying on the YMCA tradition in Camden County.
